A month of getting up at 7am
April 2009

I’m sure to many people (especially my father) a month of getting out of bed at 7am is hardly something worth discussing. But for as long as I can remember, dragging myself out of bed in the morning has been a challenge.
So I conducted a little experiment on myself to see what would happen if I committed to starting the day at 7am for 30 days in a row.
I recorded the whole thing in a series of blog posts which can be read at http://nickmcintosh1.blogspot.com/
And what did I get out of it? That a rigorous schedule does not suit my preferred lifestyle.
Sleep is something that I find extremely interesting. On average I spend more than 1/3 rd of each day asleep and to me that seems like a waste of my time. Life is short and I’m continually amazed by how days and weeks slip by in a blur. To lose 1/3 of my time to unconsciousness seems an expensive price and I’m sure there’s a better way to recover after each day.
But I still love sleep. I love the feeling of waking up and then not getting out of bed – sleeping in is one of my favourite things to do. But it frustrates me that some people can seem to happily (and productively) get by on 6 hrs or even less.
So I’m continually searching for ways to reduce the quantity of sleep (hours) while increasing the quality.
